So I basically grew up at the Thurman household (as many of us did) and my memories of Mike and all of the Thurman’s are incredibly special. One specific memory of Mike does standout for me.
It was my 1st semester at the University of Nevada and I was attempting to study for an exam in my Political Science class. I headed over to the Thurman’s and walked right in (remember I basically lived there) and I realized Mike was home. He had just returned from I believe an exchange study program in Europe. He was sitting outside soaking up some Vitamin D after just putting lemon in his hair (he liked his hair blond) just relaxing. Now we all knew that Mike was incredibly intelligent and studied Political Science, but I didn’t want to bother him as he was tired from just returning home. As I was looking around for Clay (my original study partner) Mike heard me and immediately said “Scotty how are you?”. Mike always had a way of making me (and everyone) feel so comfortable even though I hadn’t seen him in awhile. I answered honestly and told him I was nervous about this upcoming test. Mike immediately began to ask me questions and what followed was an incredibly intense 2 hour tutorial that was way beyond my understanding and quite honestly way above the level of the class I was studying for! Now I can’t remember how I did on that test, but I do like to think that maybe this moment set Mike in a direction where we all knew he had a talent and passion for.....teaching!
Mike probably did not even remember what he did for me that day, (taking the time to sit down with me) but I always will remember him as someone who had a beautiful, caring, giving soul. He was a natural born professor....excited to share his knowledge and see others learn and grow.
Rest in Peace Mike knowing that you were loved and admired by so many. Thank you for always treating me like family and doing things that meant so much to me “just naturally”! I will miss you...
